The "Trip-Train" mechanism (also called "répé'tition à déclenchement", "à poussoir" or "tandem") was seen for the first time in a Patek Philippe pocket watch around 1884 but it was only patented in 1890 (Swiss Patent CH18710).
The "Trip-Train" repeater was a Patek Philippe specialty; in fact it was the only manufacturer to have such a complication in their catalogues. These kinds of movements were produced between 1899 and 1912 and according to our researches only 54 "Trip-Train" minute repeaters have been identified in the market until today.
Most of the pocket watches seen have been sold to the American market and many only bear the retailer's name on the dial.
The present lot is the only one "Trip-Train" minute repeater known retailed by Cowell & Hubbard Co. in Cleveland, Ohio.
For a similar example see the book Patek Philippe Geneve pag. 235 by Martin Huber & Alan Banbery
