Urwerk SA was launched in 1997. The name was devised from combining the two words UR with WERK.

Ur – the city where 6000 years ago the people used the shadows cast from giant obelisks to measure the passage of time and they also created the separation of the year into 12 units, these divisions being the forerunner to the modern calendar we use today.

Werk – This is the German word meaning to work, create, evolve, shape, forge and to arouse emotions.

The creative genius behind the Urwerk UR-103, Felix Baumgartner and Martin Frei, developed an innovative time-telling machine that evades horological definition. The inspiration for the design of the watch comes from the most famous member of the world of arachnids, the Tarantula. The satellite hour display reveals the creative mechanism, while the control board allows the wearer to manually correct the movement’s precision. The watch’s curved aerodynamic form gains its inspiration from a stealth jet and allows the wearer to view the time clearly from the side or above.
