The movement of the 'Classique 3755' Breguet wristwatch perfectly showcases this archetypal watchmaker's refined level of craftsmanship in a spectacular interlacement of exquisitely engraved plates and bridges. The delicacy of the arabesques, scrolls and leaf designs emphasise the meticulous artistry of openwork. A tourbillon and a perpetual calendar put the finishing aesthetic touch to this rare timepiece. The “tourbillon”, Breguet’s historic invention was patented in 1801; the mechanism was conceived to compensate rate errors resulting from the effect of gravity on the moving parts. Breguet solved inconsistencies due to the positional dependency of watch balance by rotating the entire balance and escapement about their common axis, thereby averaging out the positional errors by the constant rotation. The mechanism was patented in 1801 as “a new regulating device known as the tourbillon”, the patent was dated according to the republican calendar of the time, 7 Messidor, Year IX.
