畢沅（1730-1797），字纕蘅，号秋帆，江蘇镇洋（今太仓）人。乾隆二十五年（1760）狀元及第，授翰林院編修。此後宦海浮沉，以湖廣總督終，後追贈太子太保。逝後二年，因和珅案累，被奪世職，並被籍沒家財。其任湖廣總督期間，召集其時著名史學家如章學誠等致其幕府，用清初徐乾學〈資治通鑒後編〉為基礎，廣采群書，加以損益，歷廿餘年，數易其稿，終成〈續資治通鑒〉二百二十卷。此書一出，他續盡廢。遂於〈資治通鑒〉合刊，是為〈正續資治通鑒〉。
