all of rectangular form, painted in a restrained palette, four with landscapes, eleven with birds and flowers, and twelve with historical and folkloric figures, all framed in six rows within a wood and bone inlaid frame, between detachable reticulated crest on the top and an apron on the bottom

Condition

There is overall wear to the enamels characteristic of the Qianjiang school. Three tiles have hairline cracks and restored breaks. Six tiles have chips and one tile has a large chip to the lower corner. There are chips to the wood frame and the side spandrels are missing.

The Qianjiang style is characterized by the use of a restrained palette in pale washes, giving the porcelain painted in this style the look of watercolors.  This style is believed to be based on literati painting, and was popular during the late Qing and early Republican periods.
