Condition

There is a repair to the lower edge of the roof of the pavilion to the left, where a separation between two colors has been stitched up. The weft in some brown areas, has disintegrated, most noticeably in the tree trunks at the lower center and lower right, and to the rocks on the lower lower left and at the lower edge. Another rock on the lower left has been patched. There is scattered staining, minor pulls and small holes. For a piece this size and age, the condition is relatively good.

拍品資料及來源

A large amount of detail has gone into the current lot. For example, on the left, it can be seen that the group of boys is admiring a scroll 'painted' with a fisherman in a boat; the fishing tackle of the boys who are fishing can also be seen. In addition, many of the boys are wearing jackets with laboriously woven designs including honeycomb and diamond patchwork, taiji emblems, clouds, prunus blossoms and other types of flowers.

The 'Hundred Boys' motif encapsulates the wish for many offspring, which was important in a society which placed great importance on the continuation of the family line and veneration of the ancestors. The motif was popular during the Ming and Qing dynasties. The 'Hundred Boys' refer to the sons of King Wen of the Zhou dynasty who had ninety-nine sons and adopted one more to make one hundred. The boy he adopted eventually grew up to become the God of thunder.

A similar panel was sold in our London rooms, 12th July 2006, lot 59, and another from the Mary Porter Walsh collection was sold in these rooms 28th November 1994, lot 170.
