carved swimming side by side on swirling ripples, the smaller bird with its heard turned sharply towards the larger bird at the rear, each clutching in its beak curved stems of lotus leaf and flowering lotus blooms, detailed with plumage, the greyish-white stone suffused with black inclusions

Condition

There are overall small chips (largest approx. 0.3cm) along the extremities of the carving, including the edges of the petals of the lotus bloom, lotus leaf, the crashing waves etc. The curled tip of the crown (approx. 0.3cm) of the smaller mandarin duck is lost. Sections of the curled stems held in the beaks of the mandarin ducks have been broken and repaired, traces of yellowed glue is still evident. The stone is of a more greyish tone compared to the catalogue illustration.
