The present jar is unusual for its design, particularly the interlinked ruyi motif. This motif is reminiscent of a Qianlong design which featured ruyi-inspired strapwork similarly rendered in iron-red and outlined in gilt paint; see a yellow-ground vase in the National Palace Museum, Taipei, included in the Museum’s exhibition Stunning Porcelains from the Ch’ien-lung Reign, Taipei, 2008, cat. no. 32; and a creamy-yellow ground double gourd vase, from the Fonthill Heirlooms and the collections of Lord Margadale of Islay, Alfred Morrison and J.T. Tai, sold at Christie’s London, 18th October 1971, lot 74, and again in these rooms, 7th October 2010, lot 2126.
