of upright rectangular section, finely carved with gentle undulating sides supported on four low corner feet, set at the base and rim with raised borders of confronted kui dragons forming archaistic fretwork, the tightly grained wood of deep reddish-brown colour with typical gold flecks and a smooth patina
Condition
The brushpot is in overall very good condition. There is a 'S'- shaped stabilised crack at one corner of the base extending on approx 4.5 cm onto one side. There are some typical age crackles along the corner edges and at the junction between the sides and rims.

Zitan brushpots of rectangular form are much rarer than the cylindrical brushpots, requiring a greater amount of the expensive resource in their construction, especially with undulating sides as in the present example. For another 18th century rectangular brushpot , see C.Y. Tsai, Zitan. The Most Noble Hardwood, My Humble House Publications, Taipei, 1996, pp. 176-177. The current example is notable for the exquisite kui dragon decoration typically found on small jade vessels and other scholars objects produced by the imperial workshops in the Qianlong era.
