Yixing wares bearing imperial reign marks are extremely rare, and even more unusual are those with enamelled decoration as seen on the present teapot. This teapot is comparable to one in the collection of the National Palace Museum, Taipei, of similar form and painted decoration on a deep-blue ground, but the base bearing a six-character Qianlong seal mark. The teapot may be found on the museum’s official website http://www.dpm.org.cn/shtml/117/@/4993.html.

For examples of Yixing teapots with imperial reign marks see two Kangxi pieces illustrated in Patrice Valfre, Yixing des Theieres Pour L’Europe (Yixing Teapots for Europe), Poligny, 2000, pls. 31-32, both in the collection of the National Palace Museum, Taipei, with enamelled decoration and four-character Kangxi yuzhi marks on the base. Another Yixing teapot covered in red glaze and made in imitation of carved lacquer, with a six-character Qianlong seal mark, is included ibid., pl. 33, also in the collection of the National Palace Museum. See also a teapot with black slip decoration, the base with an impressed six-character Qianlong reign mark included in Chinese Works of Art – Yixing Teapots, the Chang Foundation, Taipei, 1990, pl. 39.

One of the earliest Yixing chrysanthemum form undecorated teapots is recorded by Simonis Paulli in 1656, and catalogued several times in the Royal Danish collections in 1674, 1689 and 1690, now in the National Museum of Copenhagen, Denmark, published ibid., pl. 21.
