of rectangular form supported on a short straight foot, with rounded sides flaring toward the rims, the cover deftly carved in high relief through the layers of red lacquer to the green and ochre ground with two confronting five-clawed dragons writhing among ruyi-shaped clouds and peonies above jagged rocks and crested waves, flanking a 'flaming pearl' emitting a shou character formed of vapor, all reserved on a finely incised ground of green waves and ochre diapers, surrounded around the sides by alternating leafy peony and chrysanthemum blossoms within cartouche panels, the rims detailed with cash-diapers, the foot picked out with key-fret, the interior and the base lacquered in black, the latter inscribed with an eight-character horizontal gilt mark dated to the yiwei year of the Wanli reign (1595)

A related Wanli box with slight variations in decorative details, carved onto a red and black ground and the box with canted corners, in the Palace Museum, Beijing, is illustrated in Carved Lacquer in the Palace Museum, Beijing, 1985, pl. 248, together with another box of this type, but depicting a dragon and phoenix flanking a 'flaming pearl', pl. 238. Compare a box of rectangular form and canted corners, but depicting a frontal dragon within a barbed panel, also dated to the yiwei year of Wanli, in the Palace Museum, Beijing, illustrated in Wang Shixiang, Ancient Chinese Lacquerware, Beijing, 1987, col. pl. 65; another in the National Museums of Scotland, Edinburgh, published in Hu Shih-chang and Jane Wilkinson, Chinese Lacquer, Edinburgh, 1998, pl. 22; and a third sold at Christie’s Hong Kong, 27th May 2008, lot 1563.

The date 1595 is significant as it was the last year during the Ming period that all four types of official Ming lacquerware, carved red, yellow and polychrome lacquer, and tianqi lacquer, were made. After 1595 the official lacquerware created was almost entirely tianqi lacquer, possibly as a result of a failing economy and the resources required for the creation of carved lacquer.
