the wide seat of generous proportions framed by an ornately carved three-stepped throne-back and two shaped armrests, set on a bulging apron extending to slightly bow legs of square section terminating in high hoof feet further supported on a stretcher, the central panel finely carved with a writhing en face dragon with a slender undulating body and feathery sprigs of lingzhi, flanked by two similar descending dragons wreathed by feathery scrolls, and four further dragons striding on the interior and on the exterior of the armrests, the rear left uncarved, the apron centred with a mythical-beast head between similar heads at the corners and on the sides, and acanthus leaf scrolls trailing down the legs, the wood of deep chestnut tone
Condition
The surface has been dressed in a dark brown varnish to make the wood look darker. It is possible that the top half of the throne was matched to the base. The overall condition is good.
