- 《乾隆年製》款
of compressed globular form resting on a flat base, set with a short 'S'-shaped spout of square section and a ring handle on one side, brightly decorated with multi-coloured lotus scrolls against a turquoise ground, below a border of detached flower sprays reserved on a violet ground and a band of yellow-ground petal lappets surrounding the base, the stepped cover similarly decorated with concentric flower scrolls reserved on turquoise, between a border of scrolling lotus on a violet ground around the rim and a collar of pendent petal lappets encircling the domed apex and gilt-bronze knob, the rims fitted with gilt-bronze, the base further decorated with four lotus blossoms on turquoise, enclosed within a gilt-bronze footring and centred with a four-character gilt seal mark reserved on a red-ground panel
Condition
There is some typical wear and oxidization to the gilt-bronze parts and cloisons and some characteristic light pitting to in the enamels, but overall the vessel is in very good condition.

Pouring vessels of this unusual form decorated in cloisonné enamel are extremely rare although a closely related example, from the Qing court collection and still in Beijing, is illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum Metal-bodied Enamel Ware, Hong Kong, 2002, pl. 109. The Palace Museum piece also bears a four-character Qianlong reign mark on the base but incised within four connected vajra.
Vessels of this type belong to the tsampa utensils that were historically used during Tibetan Buddhist rituals and ceremonies. See a gilded-silver example, from the Tibet Museum, Lhasa, included in the exhibition Treasures from Snow Mountains, Shanghai Museum, Shanghai, 2001, p. 199, cat. no. 109, where it is noted that tsampa is the main food in Tibet and is made of barley flour. Ewers of this type usually contained special ‘clean’ water that was considered to have inherent virtues and merits such as being cool, light, fragrant, soft, clear and pure.
The Qianlong reign mark on the base is also special and rare. It is closely related to the mark on a cloisonné enamel flask in the National Palace Museum included in Enamel Ware in the Ming and Ch’ing Dynasties, Taipei, 1999, pl. 52, but without the red enamel.
