Jade carvings of double gourds were popular from the reign of the Qianlong Emperor and the present piece is impressive for the clever use of the natural shape of the pebble which has allowed for minimum wastage of the high-quality stone. For related jade carvings of double gourds, compare one fashioned with bats, sold in these rooms, 30th October 2002, lot 358; one sold at Christie’s New York, 22nd March 2007, lot 89; and another depicting double gourds only, also sold in these rooms, 4th May 1994, lot 559.
Due to its many seeds the double gourd (hulu) is a symbol of fertility in China, and the lengthy network of string-like vines and tendrils (mandai) suggest continuity; thus it can be used as a pun for ‘ten thousand generations’ (wandai).
