This piece belongs to a group of vessels made as a result of the wave of archaism which marked the 18th century, particularly Qianlong’s reign. It has a striking resemblance to cloisonné enamel vessels which also featured archaistically-rendered birds supporting small archaistic vases; for example see a Qianlong mark and period example, but surmounted on two wheels, from the Qing Court collection and still in Beijing, illustrated in The Complete Collection of treasures of the Palace Museum. Metal-bodied Enamel Ware, Hong Kong, 2002, pl. 122.
