This delicate lace-like decoration of white enamel over a turquoise ground was probably developed from an earlier method of slip-decoration where white porcelain slip was applied beneath the glaze. The technique was first introduced under the Qianlong reign to adorn a select number of wares and continued into the Jiaqing period. The new method allowed for greater control and a smoother finish. Compare a Jiaqing triple-gourd vase in the National Palace Museum, Taipei, illustrated in Liu Lian-yu, Ch’ing Official and Popular wares, Taipei, 1991, p. 252 (top left); a globular vase from the Weishaupt collection, included in the exhibition From The Dragon’s Treasure, Museum für Kunsthandwerk, Frankfurt, 1987, cat. no. 17; a lobed washer sold in these rooms, 23rd October 2005, lot 538; and a bottle vase from the Alfred Morrison collection and the Fonthill Heirlooms, sold at Christie’s London, 9th November 2004, lot 54. For the Qianlong versions, see a conjoined vase enamelled in the same techinique, previous lot of this sale (lot 3032) and a shallow bowl in the Nanjing Museum, illustrated in The Official Kiln Porcelain of the Chinese Qing Dynasty, Shanghai, 2003, p. 265.
