The overall condition is very good with only minor natural shrinkage to the wood filled with glue. The inlays remain intact with only the lower left corner with possible repair and replaced malachite.

本品以貴重紫檀木嵌配玉石作盒，偶以黃花梨代之，尤為珍稀。相類器多呈長方，蓋邊圓潤雅緻。此盒以獨特工藝嵌各類寶石，描繪泰然和諧之景，巧奪天工。材質使用廣泛，壽山石、軟玉、螺鈿、孔雀石、滑石、漆、鎏金銅和銀，不僅考驗工匠技藝之敏巧，亦促進作坊門類材質之多樣化。
盒飾「百鹿圖」，明清時期盛行。據 Terese Tse Bartholomew，《中國吉祥圖案》，三藩市，2006年，圖版110，「百鹿」諧音「百祿」，意為「承天運，進厚祿」。鹿亦是唯一尋得不朽靈芝之神物，象徵長壽。一黃花梨盒，以簡明五鹿圖飾之，曾售於紐約蘇富比2009年12月16日，編號136。
北京故宮博物院藏有較多相類嵌玉石蓋盒，詳見《故宮博物院藏文物珍品全集‧竹木牙角雕刻》，香港，2002年，編號219-248。比較一盒，上飾狩獵圖，載於《故宮雕刻珍萃》，北京，2004年，圖版100，另有一盒，外滿飾玉石花果鳥紋，圖版99；水松石山房舊藏有二例，年代較早，乃明嘉靖年間器，相信為嵌鑲名家周柱之作，當中其一飾蒙人騎馬圖，另外一盒尺寸碩大，巧飾人物，售於蘇富比2012年4月4日，編號116及179。
