Condition

The canvas has been relined. There is a light circa 3cm old vertical scratch in the upper left quadrant in the more raised parts of the impasto (visible in the catalogue illustration). Ultraviolet light reveals a circa 6cm diagonal repaired tear in the lower right corner and some scattered spots of retouching notably adjacent to the repair and in the corners. The overall appearance of the painting is good and the impasto well-preserved. The colours are less red overall than in the catalogue illustration, especially the browns. Held in a decorative gilt frame, with a cloth inner slip.

Probably painted in Asturias in 1903. Sorolla travelled to Asturias to paint in the summer of 1902 and in the spring of 1903 and 04. There he established himself at the mouth of the Nalón River near San Juan de la Arena, visiting painter and fellow student from his Rome days, Tomás García Sampedro, and close to his friend the law professor Rafael Altamira.

The present oil of children playing by a river conforms to the format of a number of other paintings that he painted there, in which he used a reduced range of colours and a limited field of vision in order to bring out the chromatic beauty of this very spontaneous documenting of local life.
