Condition

Overall the condition of the bronze is good. There is some wear and dirt to the surface consistent with age including dirt to the crevices and some rubbing to the gilding. A few minor stable hairline casting fissures are visible on the surface. There is a hole to the proper right shoulder where the cross was mounted.

拍品資料及來源

This small figure of Christ falling under the weight of his cross is after a model by Alessandro Algardi. The model was an extremely popular one and editions are known to have been produced in bronze and other materials, as well as in varying sizes. The earliest mention of a model is in the 1690 inventory of Antonia d’Amico Moretti, a goldsmith who owned several works by the sculptor (see J. Montagu, 1985, op. cit. p. 324).
