Condition

Overall the condition of the marble is very good with minor dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. The surface is a little dry and the marble may have been outside at some point, with some resultant loss to the surface detail due to the elements. There is veining to the marble consistent with material, including to the chest and to the proper left eyebrow. There are some small naturally occurring inclusions, some of which are filled, including to the proper left cheek and neck. There is a small loss to one of the locks of hair on the top of the girl's head at the back. There is wear to the socle consistent with age.

拍品資料及來源

This fine bust compares with the idealised portrait busts of young women by Bertel Thorvaldsen and his circle, particularly in the treatment of the hair; compare, for example, with Thorvaldsen's Wilhelmine Benigna Biron, duchessa di Sagan of 1818 (Majo et al, op. cit. pp. 117-118, no. 42). There is also a similarity with busts by Rudolf Schadow, including his Vittoria Caldoni in the Kurpfälzisches Museum, Heidelberg (inv. no. PS 89).
