Condition
Hinged to the mount at the upper margin. The paper has discoloured in some areas, more noticeable around the edges of the oval and there is also some discolouration in the centre of the sheet, visible at her neck line. Faint scattered foxing, barely visible. Overall in fairly good condition with the medium remaining strong and fresh.

Baptiste Gagneraux was younger brother to Bénigne Gagneraux and both artists trained under François Devosge (1732 - 1811). Two portraits executed in pastel by Baptiste Gagneraux were sold, Paris, Christie's, 18 March, 2004, lot 261. The features of the young lady in the present portrait bear a strong resemblance to the female sitter in one of the portraits sold in Paris.
