of similar design, one with a gadroon-carved shaped top-rail ornamented with a coat of arms, with paterae carved arms and folding supports, one chair bearing a label: FOLDING CHAIR/ITALIAN 16TH CENTURY/LENT BY THE BOSTON ATHENEUM, and with a inventory number in red paint, BA/W/493
Condition
Chair 1: (with carved top--rail) restoration to the left hand arm, both arms later, one arm support missing, old worm damage to the seat, some losses to carved detail, platforms possibly later. Chair 2: Some losses to the the top-rail, top-rail cracked, some worm damage and minor losses to carving. Chair 3 Later stretcher, old losses to timber. Chair 4 Later stretcher and platforms, back-rest cracked.
All have old marks and scratches throughout.
