Joseph Jakob von Plenck was an Austrian physician and was considered the founder of modern dermatology. In 1785 he was appointed professor of chemistry and botany at the Military Academy in Vienna. From 1788 Plenck published seven volumes of his Icones Plantarum Medicinalium,
containing detailed descriptions of the medical benefits of herbal plants.
The Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, has a series of sixteen comparable drawings by Joseph Jakob von Plenck in their collection (inv. no. PD.98-1973).
