  • marble with metal spear and bridle, on an ebonised wood stand

Condition

The condition of the marble is good with dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. There are some naturally occurring inclusions and a few chips to the surface, such as to the top of the armour on Saint George's proper left shoulder. There is discolouration to the edges of the roundel, perhaps where a frame once was. There is rust to the horse's bit. There is dirt to the crevices. A section of the right side of the roundel has been restored and the joint is slightly visible at both front and back. There is possibly a restoration to the horse's proper left front leg. A section of the reins is missing.

The present roundel shares its composition with the bronze sculpture hanging below the Royal coat of arm on the gates of Buckingham Palace. These gates were designed by Walter Gilbert for the Bromsgrove Guild.

Walter Gilbert founded the Bromsgrove Guild in Birmingham in 1894 with a view to designing decorative ironwork. The Guild was also famously responsible for the altarpiece for Liverpool Cathedral and the bronze doors of Herbert Baker's rebuilt Bank of England.
