Carpeaux was one of the favoured sculptors of the Emperor Napoléon III and Empress Eugenie. In 1852, Napoléon III commissioned a marble relief representing The Emperor receiving Abd el-Kader at the Palace of St. Cloud from him. Carpeaux proceeded to complete portraits of Napoléon's wife and son and visited the family in 1871 when they were exiled in England. It was on this visit that Carpeaux was asked to sculpt a bust of Napoléon himself for Empress Eugénie. He completed the sculpture shortly after the Emperor's death, and the Empress is known to have cherished it until her own death in 1920.

The present bust is a reduction of this portrait and is the only known reduction in marble. A terracotta version is in the Musée Chéret in Nice. Carpeaux dated his portrait 13 Janvier 1873, marking not the date of composition but the day that he paid his respects to the Emperor. His drawings of Napoléon's open coffin are dated to the same day.
