Condition

Overall the condition of the wood panels is good, with minor dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. There are a few small chips and losses to the wood including to the nose of the figure who points to her right knee, to the proper right little finger of the woman whose arm is raised above her head and to the proper left eye of the woman wearing a headdress. There is a loss to the edge of the panel with the woman holding her arms. There are a few small knots in the wood and some minor splitting consistent with the material. The wood backgrounds have been limed and residues are particularly visible in some of the crevices. There are a number of drilled holes to the back of the reliefs and, in the case of one of the reliefs, they are visible at the front.

Dutch artist, Charles Eyck, is primarily distinguished as a painter and draftsman; only a few sculptures by him have been offered at auction in the past. See, for example, his wood relief of a female figure which sold for nearly double its high estimate at Sotheby's Amsterdam, on 8 June 1999.
