鄭維國於1949年家居於香港，受現代水墨先鋒呂壽琨所啟發，是早期對傳統國畫進行實驗的新水墨藝術家。作為「一畫會」的創辦人之一，鄭維國的創作均體現該會的成立理念，既保留中國水墨畫的傳統精粹，也重視融合西方藝術元素，追求現代個人主義風格。他的作品運用了獨特的技巧，在完成傳統書畫濕裱過程後重填顏色，使紙本上的水墨色彩飛揚，顯得格外豐富，生氣勃勃。《向峽谷致敬》的創作靈感源自藝術家曾到訪的美國猶他州布萊斯峽谷國家公園，該地位置偏遠，侵蝕而成的岩石形態帶來壯麗莊嚴的古舊景觀，觸發他創出如此宏偉之作。
