Condition

Colour: The colours in the catalogue illustration are fairly accurate. Condition: This work is in very good condition. The sheet is attached verso to a backing board in several places. There are a few very small and unobtrusive smudges of medium visible in the margins, all of which are likely inherent to the artist's working process.

Gert & Uwe Tobias, whose current exhibition at the Whitechapel Gallery has received critical acclaim, re-invent traditional techniques and styles in a wholly twenty-first century manner to create works of curious beauty. Born in Romania, the two brothers are influenced by the fairy-tales of their native land, often utilising the darker elements of these tales as inspiration for their distinctive oeuvre. Untitled is a wonderful example of Gert & Uwe Tobias’ unique artistic style, created using the antique technique of the woodcut yet with a distinctly contemporary twist. A churning kaleidoscope of colours dominates the composition, with the suggestion of a face at its centre, whilst a vase of flowers perches resolutely on a table at the forefront of the configuration: the result is an intriguing fusion of portraiture and still life as the petals appear to become analogous to the vertebrae of a spine and vice versa. Through the exquisite craftsmanship that gives rise to the fantastical subject of Untitled, Gert & Uwe Tobias have created a work of rare and compelling power.
