This present lot is filled with auspicious meaning. The word for quail in Chinese is anchun, the first syllable an being a homophone for 'peace'. The word for nine, jiu, is a homophone for everlasting. The nine quail therefore represent everlasting peace. The peaches and lingzhi represent longevity, the pomegranates represent progeny, the millet represents harmony and ears of millet called sui, forms a pun on the phrase for 'year after year', while the orchids symbolize gentlemanly virtues. All put together, this ruyi presents the wish that the owner is virtuous and will have a long, peaceful, harmonious life and many offsprings, year after year.
