描述

with broad shoulders and bulging body tapering towards the base, the sides carved in shallow relief with panels enclosing the characters qingxiang meijiu (clear fragrant lovely wine) against a diaper ground, alternating with panels of pomegranate, loquat, peach and lychees, the shoulders set with opposing animal-mask handles, pierced for the insertion of loose rings, above a band of upright slender leaves encircling the base, the footrim neatly trimmed and burnt orange, the base countersunk and glazed, with a pierced wood cover surmounted by a white jade pierced dragon finial and wood stand (3)

Condition

Some typical wear and scratching to the glaze and some abrasion to the mask handles. Two of the panels have several glaze pull, partially visible in the catalogue illustration. The cover has an area of loss to the jade finial.

The present lot is unusual because of the handles on the sides. Most known examples lack such handles. A jar of similar decoration, but without the handles is illustrated in John Ayers, The Baur Collection: Chinese Ceramics, Geneva, 1968, Vol. I, fig. A108. Other examples have sold at Christie's Hong Kong, 29th May 2007, lot 1474, and Sotheby Parke-Bernet, 23rd & 24th May 1974, lot 340.
