The form and style of handles on the present lot are rare.  Ultimately derived from Ming dynasty bronze prototypes, the chilong-form handles are most unusual on Kangxi porcelain. More frequently fish, dragon and elephant-head handles are used to ornament the sides of vases.  Given their size and placement, it seems most unlikely that the handles were meant in any way to be practical. This interesting variant underscores the advanced technical skills of the artisans at Jingdezhen that would allow for such spirited aesthetic observation.  A smaller pair of vases with similarly formed, but gilded, handles from the collections of William L. Parker and Horace Trumbauer were sold in these rooms 18th September 1987, lot 403.
