This is one of two peach-stone masterpieces from the Bloch collection, the other having been sold at Bonhams Hong Kong, 28thNovember 2011, lot 75. The rough exterior surface has been transformed into a high-relief subject of auspicious Buddha’s hand fruits growing rather upwards in what can only be defiance of gravity. The two flying bats add a wish for good fortune. None of this has been achieved at the expense of the formal qualities of the bottle as a whole, which are impressive, considering its miniature size and the origin of the material. If we excuse the unavoidable natural, random serrations around the outer neck, the snuff bottle is a perfectly formed miniature version of a compressed ovoid bottle with a cylindrical neck of a type well known in the eighteenth century.
The finest of these miniature nut and fruit-stone carvings seem to date from the eighteenth century, certainly from the Qianlong reign and possibly before, although it is difficult to know, since prior to the Qianlong period they were so rarely dated. They certainly continued to be made into the late Qing.
