of rectangular form with shallow everted sides supported on a thick slightly tapered foot of conforming section, deeply and densely carved through alternating layers of brownish-black and red lacquer to the ochre ground below with two large peony blossoms naturalistically detailed with curling petals, dense stamen and attendant buds, all wreathed in lush foliage and framed by a thick rim, the exterior similarly carved in high relief with a continuous spray of leafy peonies against the ochre ground

There are some typical age cracks and crackles overall, with some retouching to the lacquer in the recesses, including one 5.5 cm vertical crack lifting on the interior to the right of the tray (showing on the illustration in the catalogue). The two left corners are restored with relacquering on the rim and light touch up on the underside.

此長方盤形制珍稀，飾放綻牡丹成雙，姿態高雅曼妙，偃仰相映，佈局舒展，刀工酣暢明淨，彷彿花葉搖曳，饒有南宋之風。類同雕漆作例，刻蓮花葉紋，錄於《宋元の美：伝来の漆器を中心に》，根津美術館，東京，2004年，編號87。尚有飾菊梅牡丹之例，曾展於《中国宋時代の彫漆》，上述出處，編號20。
