陳丹青在1980年以其劃時代的作品《西藏組畫》一舉成名，其在當時所引起的轟動是後輩的青年藝術家至今無法超越的，《西藏組畫》標誌著中國油畫自1949年後30年深受蘇聯藝術影響的時代的終結。西藏是陳丹青早年創作的主要母題，那種原生態的質樸生活和完全有別於漢地的壯闊風光令陳丹青深深的迷醉其間。創作於1988年的《牧羊女》是陳丹青延續了長達十年的西藏題材後期的代表作，畫面中四個牧羊女朝向四個不同的方向，在遼遠的天空和草原下仿佛已站立了千年。陳丹青透過其高超的繪畫技巧，營造出永恆而神秘的氛圍，使這件傑出的作品自有一種深沉而凝重的力量。
