1980年代初,中國當代水墨是在反思文革、社會現代性變革和西方文化的衝擊下發展起來的。對文化現代性的焦慮,表現為對傳統水墨畫的反叛。
作為85新潮美術標誌性人物之一的谷文達,是陸儼少的山水畫研究生,對傳統筆墨有很深的領悟,將山水畫的筆墨形式符號化的《水墨世界》,彰顯他“解構傳統”抱負的同時,也顯現出他與傳統水墨的精神聯繫。
《遺失的王朝-B系列4號》(拍品編號130)等,則從畫面結構上繼承了他一直情有獨鍾的雄渾大氣的北宋山水,但在形式上,卻突破了傳統的桎梏,以錯位、肢解的偽篆書文字製作畫面:全作的主體,是藝術家創造的偽篆字,中心的紅色印章是他最早刻制的一枚“偽漢字印章”,據他詮釋可讀為“酒神”,顯然受到尼采的“酒神精神”的影響。紅叉則可能來自他所受的文革“大字報”影響,被他自己認為是最早“介入波普藝術”的一種表現。背景的抽象水墨肌理,從技巧上炫耀著畫家的傳統功力。這種對中國文字與詩意圖像的“整體性解構”,從精神上挑戰著正統體制。
