Albert Bartholomé naît en 1848. Elève de Barthélémy Menn il entame une carrière de peintre à Genève avant de s'installer à Paris où il travaille sous la direction de Gérôme et où il devient l'ami intime d'Edgar Degas. A la mort de son épouse en 1886, il se consacre presque exclusivement à la sculpture. Exprimant son lyrisme par des formes d'une pureté classique, son oeuvre est empreinte d'une grande mélancolie. Il obtient le grand Prix de la sculpture à l'Exposition Universelle de 1900.

Albert Bartholomé, born in 1848, was a student of Barthélémy Menn, with whom he began his career as a painter in Geneva before moving to Paris. There, he worked under the direction of Gérôme, and become a close friend of Edgar Degas. After his wife's death in 1886, he worked exclusively on sculpture, expressing his lyricism by using pure and classical forms in works full of melancoly. He won the Grand Prix de la sculpture at the Exposition Universelle in 1900.
