Condition
The canvas has not been lined. There is no visible retouching under ultraviolet light (some small areas fluoresce green, however these are most likely the artist's original pigments and not retouching). Apart from some light surface abrasion in the hat of the man standing in blue to the left, this painting is in good condition, and is ready to hang.
Held in an elaborate gilt frame.

《牌局》設在托斯卡納鄉間一個典型的義大利小酒館露台，是索比多姿多彩的風俗畫代表作。在他的藝術生涯中，托斯卡納村莊一直是其創作靈感來源。索比畫中的人物很多都是穿著十八世紀服裝的劇中人物，與直接取材自大自然的晴朗風景相襯。《牌局》在創作當時手法可謂現代前衛，展現了法國戶外寫生手法與現實主義畫家的影響，落筆有力、色調明亮。
在索比的筆下，意大利總是一個情誼滿溢、社會共融的整體，就像此畫面上的貴族與村民共享夏日午後。畫家運用十八世紀的服裝，把場景帶出當下時空，使畫面更加永恆，猶如華托和朗克雷筆下的遊園聚會。
