This Torah Ark Curtain, created from a kashmir shawl, bears a plaque with the Hebrew inscription Dedicated to the soul of the exalted Moses Simon Duwayk (Dweck) ha-Cohen who died on the third of Tammuz in the year [5]621 (=11 June 1861) and was buried on the 4th, here in Calcutta.

A permanent Jewish community in Calcutta was only founded at the beginning of the ninetenth century when Jews from Syria and Iraq settled there. The first Jewish merchant to establish a home in Calcutta was Shalom ben Obadiah ha-Cohen (d. 1836), was originally from Aleppo. With the arrival of Moses ben Simon Duwayk ha-Cohen and his family from Aleppo, Calcutta began to develop into one of the most prosperous and flourishing cultural and economic centers of Jewish life in India.  The Jews from Syria brought with them some of the customs from their native land such as dedicating a Torah Ark Curtain with a round silver disc containing a memorial inscription.  The person honored on this dedicatory plaque is none other than the founder of the Calcutta Jewish community, Rabbi Moses ben Simon Duwayk ha-Cohen (1825-1861), who together with his sons, were the mainstay of Jewish life through the nineteenth and the beginning of the twentieth century.  His autobiographical Judeo-Arabic diary (Naurooz) contains an abundance of historical information and is a treasure trove of data on the Jewish community in Calcutta. The Duwayk (Dweck) family is extremely well known. Over the course of many generations, members of the family from Aleppo have settled all over the world, particularly in Israel, the United States, and Calcutta.
