- Approximately 80 x 58 inches
wool with silk, pieced, appliqued and embroidered.
height 58 in.; width 70 in.
147.3 cm; 177.8
This Torah Ark Curtain is designed with a central Menorah motif and numerous Hebrew inscriptions including Psalm 67. The technique is closely related to wall hangings produced in Resht, the largest city on Iran's Caspian Sea coast. Resht was a major center of trade between Caucasia, Russia and Iran and is especially known for its pieced and embroidered textiles. Artisans there created colorful decorative patterns for wall hangings and cushion covers by cutting out pieces of felted wool and sewing them onto a cotton or wool foundation. A dedicatory inscription at the top indicates that it was donated by Rabbi Abraham Motola.
