A tallit katan is a fringed garment traditionally worn either under one’s clothing by Jewish males. This elaborate example, likely from Turkey, was created for a boy to wear at his Bar Mitzvah. Inscribed in Hebrew with verse from Genesis 49-22, Joseph is a fruitful vine, a fruitful vine near a spring, whose branches climb over a wall. These verses are considered by many to have amuletic properties.
