Condition

This work is in good condition. There is evidence of thin hairline craquelure across the surface of the painting and minor paint losses along the four edges. There is no evidence of restoration under UV.

朱沅芷─風車小屋
1930年,朱沅芷結束第一次旅法時期,到達紐約開始新的發展。此時,他參加了布魯克林博物館的「國際藝術家繪畫、雕塑及素描聯展」;而紐約現代美術館舉行了首次「美國畫家與攝影家壁畫展」,邀請六十四位藝術家參展,而年輕的朱沅芷獲邀其中,並為唯一的亞洲藝術家代表,其藝術風彩光芒綻現。

時年經濟大蕭條的爆發,當時美國總統羅斯福推出「聯邦工賑計畫」,由政府給予藝術家津貼補給。在總統夫人的親筆推薦下,朱沅芷亦獲政府補助讓他能堅持創作,而《風車小屋》亦在這段時期誕生。

受到巴黎畫派影響,朱沅芷紐約時期的畫風與早年在舊金山的作品截然不同,從共色主義的幾何式構圖,過渡至城市與自然的風景韻味,在用色方面,隨著社會環境與個人生活的困難,其濃艷的色彩中亦不禁帶有愁緒。《風車小屋》透露著一股淡然的悠閒,與人在異鄉的不羈,荷蘭式的風車帶來歐洲般的小城風景,滿載巴黎畫派的色彩,停泊一隅的帆船小舟,蜿蜒曲徑的公園小徑,更予人舒適寫意的感覺,似欲置身其中,忙裡偷閒。藝術家此時身在紐約,故本作所見的景物,理應位於紐約周邊的別墅區,當地風景優美,亦是畫家聚落,並保存著許多建於十九世紀初期的風車,被視為地標式歷史建築。朱沅芷經常在紐約市內取景寫生,在漫遊採風時完成此作。
