Condition

The work is overall in good condition. There is a tiny paint loss in the middle of the left edge and below the left hand of the girl. There is no evidence of restoration under UV light.

借物抒情,意蘊深濃

《遠方來信》在意境上顯示了深厚的東方色彩。自晚唐五代開始,蠟燭被文學家塑造成閨中情思的寄託,並逐漸成為藝術場景裡的氛圍特徵,而緩緩落下的蠟淚,更呼應著女性懷念遠遊者的漫長等待。花間詞人李珣《望遠行》中「水雲迢遞雁書遲。屏半掩,枕斜欹,蠟淚無言對垂」數句,跟《遠方來信》彷彿天造地設,把女性柔弱而深情的守候,在孤獨幽暗的環境中突顯出來。作為場景重心的蠟燭,在本作不僅擔當了書寫信箋的光源,亦象徵了主角在無盡期盼裡的一點希望,似乎每添一根紅燭,與身處異地的遠方通信者就更能心靈相通。藝術家將少女的細膩情感刻劃入微,其所思念者為何,畫中並沒有清楚指明,卻暗寓於燭光背後牆壁上昏暗的老照片,既是實景,又隱喻時光荏苒的回憶,以撩動觀者思緒,引起共鳴。

汲古典寫實精華,創人間至美

作為中國寫實畫派靈魂人物,王沂東無論在人物造型、場景設定抑或氣氛塑造方面均造詣深厚。《遠方來信》描繪的雖然是純樸少女,其美感卻隱隱呼應著歐洲古典寫實經典。在繪畫中引入光影效果,以強化作品的戲劇性,是文藝復興以來常見的創作手法,而利用蠟蠋為光源燃亮畫面,並產生私密、隱蔽氣氛,堪稱十七世紀法國宮廷畫家拉圖爾(Georges de La Tour)的得意技法,而荷蘭黃金時代大師維梅爾(Johannes Vermmer),分段亦以描繪仕女日常生活而名重於世。本作以中國藝術意境出發,在構圖和技巧上採納西方精華,兩者結合於鄉土題材之上,使得畫中打扮樸素、不施脂粉的少女,仍然藉著嫺靜細緻的身體語言,透現一種古典風致。藝術家在生活中發掘美感,有如伯樂相馬,亦如璞中琢玉,使中國亙古綿延的鄉土生活,在此顯示出一種時代氣息。
