以韻吞色,以色噬象

觀看吳大羽的作品,需要深入解讀與思考,許多高度抽象的構圖,其實包含一定的具象元素。《千秋爭霸》驟看是一幅以藍色為主調的多彩布局,但在細心關注之下,其實隱藏著京劇臉譜,其正中深藍部份為側面,左上方的淺藍則為點翠羽冠,頭頂的圓形是冠上絨球,夾雜其中的紅色部份則似為紅纓。然而人物造型清晰與否,已然不再重要,只因京劇元素之於本作,只是吳大羽的藝術養份,卻非作品的主角。

關於這一點,吳冠中曾經如此評論:「因外在的形被捲入了心魂的翻滾中,變形了,欲辨已忘形,但卻又形迹依稀,道是無形卻有形。這關鍵,這主宰,是韻,形與色為韻所吞吐……強勁的吳大羽的韻,中國的韻,中國的韻吞噬了西方的形和色,這是油畫民族化千種道路中一條鮮明獨特的新航道。」吳大羽以韻吞色,以色噬象,因此其作品色彩重於形象,而韻味又凌駕色彩,吳冠中對其恩師的評論,可說切中要點。

抽象表現主義裡的京劇元素

同為抽象表現主義代表,美國大師波洛克(Jackson Pollock)的早期作品,亦有不少半具象人物,其構圖往往前後景交疊,筆觸張狂恣意,在複雜的構成中展現情感和形象。吳大羽以中國精神詮釋抽象表現主義,《千秋爭霸》除了在取材上吸納京劇人物,用色上亦援引傳統,從「正五色」(白、青、黑、赤、黄)和「間五色」(天青、紫、碧粉、紅、黃褐)之中分別採用了「青」(深藍)和「天青」(淺藍),其中深藍在臉譜語言之中象徵剛直不阿、桀驁不馴,如《上天台》的猛將馬武、《連環套》的豪俠竇爾敦等,而淺藍在京劇服飾─特別在帽盔之上─象徵「點翠」,為舞台人物最精緻華麗的裝飾。吳大羽悉數消納融會,發展出自成一派的藝術語言。

在杭州藝專教育出趙無極、朱德群和吳冠中等國際大師的吳大羽,平生作品大多毀於戰火與社會運動,直至改革開放,他才於人生的最後十年,再度創作傳世。耄耋之年的吳大羽繪畫,色彩濃烈飽滿,構圖緊密繁複,似在有限尺幅內,釋放無限激情,堪稱中國的抽象表現主義一宗大師。
