the flattened globular body rising from a short oval foot to a waisted neck flanked by a pair of ruyi handles, delicately painted in underglaze-blue and enamelled in shades of green, yellow, iron-red, pink and white, each face depicting a bird perched on a gnarled branch of prunus blossom accompanied by bamboo, all between pendent and upright hooked flame motifs, the neck decorated with further bamboo branches, inscribed to the base with a six-character Qianlong seal mark in underglaze blue

Condition

There is a V-shaped area of restoration to each side of the neck from just below where the handles join the neck. An inverted polymer crown has been has been used to form the rim. There is enamel flaking to one petal of one prunus flower.

本品器形和紋飾可上溯明永樂(1403-24)青花花鳥紋扁瓶,但其風格獨特,應屬孤例。永樂青花扁瓶現僅一件存世,但其設計於清代官窯相當盛行,雍正(1723-35)、乾隆(1736-95)年間皆有仿造之,惟多見青花或釉裏紅。本品青花上施加釉上彩,斑斕奪目,不見他例。

粉彩紋飾上加入釉下鈷藍原已極為罕有,本品更完美揉合釉下、釉上彩,營造和諧悅目的畫面。瓶肩、手柄、瓶足上以沒骨法描繪朵菊及如意紋,同様不可多得。

此瓶設計由多重圖案拼湊而成,瓷匠須先於素瓷胎上勾畫間斷之釉下青花圖案,再經上釉、窯燒,最後施釉上彩以完成整個構圖。如此繁複製作,除明代五彩瓷器外近乎見所未見。清代瓷匠為簡化工序及降低失敗率,幾乎完全不用釉下青花,只以釉上彩著色。

粉彩紋飾上加入釉下青花者僅存數例,其中包括:一粉彩嬰戲圖小罐,背景山石以釉下青花勾繪而成(圖一),及一粉彩百猴圖撇口瓶,部分細節以釉下藍刻畫。兩者均帶乾隆年製署款,現藏北京故宮博物院,錄於《故宮珍藏康雍乾瓷器圖錄》,香港,1989年,頁341,圖版22及頁346,圖版27。同可比較臺北故宮博物院藏一青花加彩龍鳳紋瓶,週邊纏枝牡丹以釉下藍繪製,見於《清康雍乾名瓷特展》,國立故宮博物院,臺北,1986年,編號84)。

釉上粉彩及釉下青花同見一器之作例,偶爾亦見釉下鈷藍用作勾勒線條之用(如闘彩)或作為主圖以外之環飾,兩者皆不須預先周密規劃釉上、下彩之協調以確保構圖整體和諧。前者例見於康蕊君,《玫茵堂中國瓷器珍藏》,倫敦,1994-2010年,卷4,編號1749,售於香港蘇富比2011年4月7日,編號7。後者一作例為鮑氏收藏內一對粉彩花鳥圖梅瓶,鵲雀穿插於花果繁茂的樹枝間,瓶頸、肩、足環飾青花紋飾為畫面作框,圖刊於John Ayers,《鮑爾收藏中國瓷器》,日內瓦,1999年,卷2,圖版232及233。

本品傚仿之明、清青花扁瓶雛本前後方皆畫面不一,亦無年款。而清乾隆釉裏紅作例則兩邊紋飾一致,與本品相類。倫敦大英博物館大維德收藏内有一永樂青花扁瓶,載於康蕊君和Jessica Harrison-Hall,《中國陶瓷:大維德收藏精選》,倫敦,2009年,頁61(圖二);又一青花作例屬雍正年器但無款,曾先後為Richard de la Mare,日本阪本氏及玫茵堂收藏,刊於上述康氏著《玫茵堂中國瓷器珍藏》,編號1712,2011年4月7日售於香港蘇富比,編號76(圖三);北京故宮博物院清宮舊藏有一釉裏紅作例與本品更為接近,主題一致,但表現手法有別,錄於《北京故宮博物院藏文物珍品大系—青花釉裏紅(下)》,上海,2000年,卷III,圖版177(圖四);該扁瓶雖無年款,但與另一個1974年7月8/ 9日售於倫敦蘇富比,編號279、帶乾隆年製署款之扁瓶非常相似。
