Braun and Hogenberg's plan of Amsterdam was issued in the first printed atlas of the towns of the world, the Civitates Orbis Terrarum, which eventually appeared in six volumes. It is a derivative of the important and extremely rare plan by Cornelis Anthonisz., first published in 1544. The commercial success of the Civitates saw a host of derivatives, popularising the delineation into the seventeenth century.
