A very rare collection of photographs of the 1857 Madras Exhibition of Raw Products, Arts and Manufactures of Southern India, including interior and exterior views of the Banqueting Hall, Madras where the exhibition was held. Tripe took these photographs between March and May 1857 for the Madras Government and represent his first work as official photographer to the Madras Presidency and are the first series of photographs Tripe made primarily on glass negatives. The objects exhibited included arms and armour, sundials, silversmith and goldsmith work, Chunam lattice work, Vizagapatam work (in ivory, buffalo and elk horn), sandalwood carving, Chinese, Japanese, and Burmese bronzes, ancient pottery and brassware.
