Large oblong folio (323 x 470mm.), 110 albumen prints, comprising 89 large (average 200 x 250mm., or the reverse) and 21 smaller (average 165 x 230mm., or the reverse), mounted on card, recto and verso, many captioned in ink on the mount, disbound, a few mounts and photographs with heavy dust-soiling and stains, some scattered spotting and fading, some mounts chipped and frayed at edges

An important collection of early photographs of Hong Kong, China and Southeast Asia, including photographs of Hong Kong and China by William Pryor Floyd (1834-c.1900), Angkor Wat and the French Mekong expedition of 1866 by Emile Gsell (1838-1879) and Calcutta by John Edward Saché (1840-1882).

The images include: Hong Kong and Kowloon (37); portraits of Chinese and Japanese people (8); full length portrait of the King of Cambodia; reception of the King of Cambodia at Government House, Hong Kong; Canton (5); Macao (5, including a 3-part panorama); Yokohama (5, including a 2-part panorama); Shanghai; views in and around Manila (13), including some possibly by Albert Honiss; Angkor Wat and Cambodia (15), and Calcutta (19), including the devastation of the Calcutta cyclone of 1864.

The group photograph of the French commission d'exploration du Mékong taken at Angkor Wat in 1866 by Emile Gsell, shows Captain Ernest Doudart de Lagrée, Lieutenant Francis Garnier, Lieutenant Louis Delaporte, Dr Clovis Thorel, Dr Lucien Joubert and Louis de Carné.
