"This work is generally held by historians to be apocryphal, and the name Coreal to be the pseudonym for somebody who never undertook the voyages described... Coreal claims to have travelled to the New World in 1666 and 1697, visiting the Antilles, Florida, Mexico, Central and South America" (Borba de Moraes). He was evidently inspired by Pyrard, Froger and others. His adventures end with the first volume and the second comprises the true narratives of Raleigh, Narbrough and others.
A very interesting association copy, from the library of Charles Marie de la Condamine, with his stamp on each title. La Condamine (1701-1774), geographer, astronomer and mathematician, travelled to Ecuador in 1735-43 and in the Amazon 1743-45 and whether or not he was aware of the apocryphal nature of the work, it would none the less have been pertinent to his own travels.
