mounted to Strathmore board, signed in pencil on the mount, Carmel studio stamps (BMFA 7 and 8), titled and dated in ink, on the reverse, framed, 1938, probably printed between 1963 and 1970 (400 Photographs, p. 115)
Condition
This print is in generally excellent condition. In high raking light, a few tiny deposits of original retouching are visible overall. Visible upon extremely close examination are the following: a 1/4-inch horizontal, soft impression that does not break the emulsion in the lower left corner; and a tiny, matte brown-colored particle to the right of Half Dome.
There is faint sunning on the 1/4-inch portion of the mount directly surrounding the image. In the lower right corner of the mount, 'g' is written in an unidentified hand in pencil. There are a few thin remnants of adhesive residue from a previous mat on the front of the mount.
Karen Haas's and Rebecca Senf's book, 'Ansel Adams in the Lane Collection,' publishes the most comprehensive list to date of the studio stamps and labels Adams used throughout his career. Our dating of this print is based upon the authors' assessment of the use dates of stamps 7 and 8 on the reverse of the mount: 1963 to 1970.
