The phrase "Vy byste me byl znicil" ("You would have ruined me") appears, not in the opera itself, but in the Album that Janáček and Kamila Stösslová kept together from October 1927 until August 1928. The phrase is apparently a speech-melody that the composer attributed to Kamila herself: see G.Chew, 'Reinterpreting Janáček and Kamila', in M. Beckerman, Janáček and His World (2003), p.135. Janáček devised the libretto for this opera from Rudolf Tesnohlídek's novel Liska Bystrouska (1921).
